Summary

Students approach AI with scepticism and ethical concerns, or curiosity but with little reflection, while educators struggle to integrate it critically and meaningfully into their teaching. Following the process of the making of an educational tool, this paper aims to play a part in supporting digital design students and educators in navigating this evolving landscape of design. This paper outlines considerations in the making of an ‘AI Collaboration Canvas’. A tool that seeks to support design education by fostering ethical, critical, and effective engagement with generative AI. Drawing on insights from interviews and expert discussions. The paper provides insights into introducing AI to design students by focusing on practical applications of generative AI, which offers an accessible and engaging entry point into the world of AI. It also presents considerations for educators to help students critically engage with AI's ethical dimensions, such as bias, privacy, and accountability, making these findings relevant for broader discussions in design education and curriculum development.
