Roland van de Sande, R.N, MSc. PhD-Candidate (1960) is involved in psychiatric nursing practice since 1979. Domains of practice are; intensive care in clinical adult and adolescent psychiatry and community crisis resolution teams. In 2002 the Master of Science Degree in Nursing was achieved at the University of Wales, Cardiff. Recently a PhD study is nearly accomplished on short term risk assessment in acute psychiatric wards. Over the past 4 years research articles on clinical decision-making, monitoring acute patients and analysis on restraint and seclusion in acute wards were accomplished for peer reviewed academic journals and chapters for (mental health) nursing manuals.
Apart from academic and clinical supervision work he is appointed as senior lecturer at the Hogeschool Utrecht, University of Applied Science. In the Centre of Nursing Studies he is responsible for several modules in the Master of Advanced Nursing Practice in Mental Health Care. Specific area of interests are risk assessment and clinical decision making, routine outcome measuring psycho-pharmacotherapy, and supervision in the process towards best practice dissertations. This educational work is combined with a part-time appointment at Bavo-Europoort (Mental Health Trust-Rotterdam) as an academic nurse at the department of acute and intensive psychiatry.
At international level he is involved in several research and practice in development multi-center projects, mainly driven by Horatio, European Psychiatric Nurses (General Secretary,2008-2011) and the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group. From this perspective the state of art of local practices are systematically evaluated and relevant evidence is gathered in a dynamic process towards best practices. The aim of all these activities in acute psychiatric nursing is to establish evidence informed treatment and education modalities. In addition to this there is a lot work to do in combating the inequalities for nurses in Europe to contribute in practice innovations in acute mental health care. Hogeschool Utrecht, University of Applied Science is one the key stakeholders in developing European consensus based Bachelor and Master modules on clinical decision making, risk management and routine patient outcome monitoring. Visiting lecturers and summer schools are provided in collaboration with several Irish, British, Scandinavian and American partner institutes.

Dr. Denis Ryan, PhD., BSc, Dip Prof Studies, Cert BT. CAC, RPN, RGN
Prof. Dr. Denis Ryan has over 34 years experience in the delivery, management and education sectors in Health and Social Care in Ireland and internationally. His background is primarily in mental health services. He developed the first public addiction counseling services provided in Ireland’s Mid West region in the early 1980’s, having worked in adult mental health services before that. His initial training was in psychiatric and general nursing and he followed this with dedicated training programmes in Counselling and Behaviour Therapy. He subsequently undertook academic studies, achieving a Fist Class Honours BSc degree in Nursing. This was followed by research studies in stress and coping and he completed his doctoral studies focusing on occupational stress in public service work through the Department of Applied Psychology at University College, Cork.
Much of his career has been spent in education and management positions. Having qualified as a psychiatric (mental health) nurse in 1979, he spent a period working as a staff nurse in clinical practice across a range of mental health service locations, but mainly in acute inpatient care. He then undertook a programme in General nursing and returned to mental health, gaining experience in community care, before moving into Alcoholism Counseling. He subsequently worked as the youngest Assistant Chief Nursing Officer in the Mid West area of Ireland and was appointed to a similar post in the South Eastern Health Board in 1993. He became the first Nursing Practice Development Co-coordinator for the Mental Health Services of the South Eastern Health Board in Ireland in 1998, establishing their Nursing Practice Development Unit. Among other things, this unit established and monitored standards of healthcare practice across the 5 mental health services of the South Eastern region and it also had responsibility for ensuring that practice placements for student nurses met the requirements and standards of the National Nursing Board (An Bord Altranais).
In 2000 he moved into education full time, moving to take up a post of Tutor in the Mid Western Health Board’s Mental Health Services. From there he moved to the University of Limerick as Lecturer and subsequently as Senior Lecturer in the Nursing & Midwifery Department. Before taking up appointment with NCII as the Foundation Professor of Counseling & Psychotherapy and Dean, he held a number of international posts including visiting Clinical Lecturer at the University of Hull. He has provided guest lectures in Universities and Health Services in the US, Australia and across Europe. In Ireland he was a founding member and Interim National Secretary of the Irish Institute of Mental Health Nursing and currently serves as National Vice Chairman. He has also recently been appointed to the Board of Alljeff, a charitable body offering addiction services in the Midwest region. In addition to his work at the Faculty of Health, the University of Applied Science, Utrecht he also serves as Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, he has also acted as External examiner for taught programmes as well as doctoral studies in Ireland, the UK and Australia. He also serves as moderator for an International Internet based Discussion Forum for Mental Health Nursing and he sits on the Executive as Scientific Programme coordinator of the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group as well as the Expert Panel of Horatio (The European Psychiatric Nursing association). In addition he acts as peer reviewer for a number of international journals.
He has published widely in health related fields. He has undertaken service and role reviews in a number of areas. He regularly presents at international conferences. Much of his academic work has concentrated in three key areas; namely Stress and Coping; Conflict, Aggression and Work-related violence as well as Evidence Based Health Service Policy and management. He is committed to the development of best ‘evidence-based’ practice as well as the highest standard of practice in health and social care settings. To this end he has developed and designed educational programmes at Levels 7, 8 and 9 as well as having been involved in the supervision and examination of doctoral level students in Ireland, Australia and the UK. He has been involved in programme development and management at the University of Limerick, University College Cork, Waterford Institute of Technology, University of Applied Science, Utrecht as well as being an external expert n validation procedures for programmes in Dundalk Institute of Technology, The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Waterford Institute of Technology and Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland. He has acted as external reviewer for programmes across Ireland and is currently External Examiner with Athlone Institute of Technology; The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has just completed a term as External Examiner with Trinity College.
